St. John's wort (Hypericum L.) - a genus of plants from the St. John's wort family. Includes at least 507 species. These plants are mostly found in temperate climates and in the mountains of the tropical zone. They inhabit very diverse habitats - from rocky places in the mountains, through forests, meadows and grasslands to wetlands. Woody species are found in the African mountains, and shrubs mainly in the Himalayas. There are 8 naturally occurring species in Poland, the most common of which is St. John's wort. It is also a valued medicinal plant. Shrubs are often cultivated as ornamental species.
Radial, bisexual, they are usually gathered in tip-like inflorescences at the top of the shoot, less often they develop singly at the tips of the stems. The sepals of the calyx are usually 5, less often 4, often glandularly ciliated or fringed on the edge, fused at the base or free, usually permanent - surrounding the fruit at the base, less often falling off. Yellow petals (occasionally whitish or orange), five, less often four, usually slightly asymmetrical. Sometimes there are glands at the edges, but unlike sessile sepals. The fall off or the behavior of petals that only wilt after flowering is of taxonomic importance when divided into sections. Stamens always numerous, gathered in bunches opposite the petals (corresponding in number). The threads of the stamens in bunches are fused with epiphyses, sometimes they also fuse into a ring surrounding the ovary. Upper ovary, 3–5 chambered, with 3–5 pistil necks.
