Common Tashnik (Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik.) - a species of plant belonging to the cruciferous family. It probably comes from the eastern part of the Mediterranean, but today it is widely spread all over the world, including Poland. It is found in a variety of habitats, usually as a ruderal plant and a difficult weed to eradicate. It is harmful when growing in crops, mainly because it facilitates infestation with parasites and pathogens for which it is an intermediate host. It is used as a medicinal plant, and regionally also as an edible plant (valued especially in East Asia). It is also an oil and honey plant, is used in biotechnology, biomonitoring, soil phytoremediation, is sometimes treated by scientists as a model species, and also helps to fight insects that are nuisance to humans.
Tasznik herb has been used in medicine and folk herbal medicine since ancient times. Hippocrates (460–377 BCE) described the tashnik as the most important "uterine medicine". Traditionally, the tashnik was usually used as an antihaemorrhagic drug, also astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, blood pressure lowering, urinary antiseptic, the infusion was used to avoid scurvy. In folk medicine in Latvia, it was also used against cancer. Locally, in Poland, the tashnik was also used against headaches (Żywiec), for coughs (near Zbaraż), for malaria (Międzyrzec Podlaski, Kujawy), and for diarrhea (Wieliczka). In Tibetan medicine, tashnik is a medicinal plant used to heal eyes, diarrhea and to strengthen the body. The plant was also used to a limited extent in Chinese medicine (for non-specific eye diseases and dysentery), and was also used in Turkish and Japanese medicine. Herbs poster, Tasznik.
